Infrastructure
Heavy cargo is mainly shipped by sea, and passenger transportation is mainly by air, either by helicopters or by smaller airplanes. Greenland has very few roads, which are only to be found in the towns and the immediate environs.

In general sea transportation in Arctic waters is limited by large numbers of floating icebergs in summer and by the ice coverage, at least in the northern parts, in winter. Air transportation is also limited to a certain extent by strong winds deriving from the inland ice. In addition, the sparsely distributed population in relatively small towns rules out the building of large airports. Road transportation between the towns would be impossible for many reasons, principally that the numerous bridges that would have to be constructed would be extremely vulnerable to the many drifting icebergs.

The presence of permafrost also has a great influence on the infrastructure in terms of the construction of roads, houses, airports, etc.

Royal Arctic Line is a fully modern container shipping company. The company has exclusive rights to operate regular services between ports in Greenland, and between Greenland and the rest of the world.

Air Greenland operates regular flights from Copenhagen to Kangerlussuaq and Narsarsuaq. During the summer Scandinavian Airlines also operates the Copenhagen-Kangerlussuaq route. It is possible to fly into East Greenland from Iceland. Both interna-tional airports offer easy access to other parts of Greenland by either plane, helicopter or ship.
